How Elestrin Works

Elestrin gel uses a special gel technology

Elestrin is designed with the unique and patented Advanced Transdermal Delivery (ATD) system. This system increases the absorption rate of low-dose estrogen into your skin.1,2 Associations such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), North American Menopause Society (NAMS), and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) advise that hormone therapy should be given at the lowest dose that helps, for the shortest time needed.7-9

How ATD works1,2:

  1. Elestrin gel penetrates the skin. Once you've applied Elestrin to a small area of your upper arm, the alcohol in Elestrin will start to evaporate. When this happens, the concentration of drug increases. Components of Elestrin allow for a low dose of estradiol (a key estrogen hormone) to be delivered through the skin.
  2. Penetration is enhanced. Elestrin gel features a penetration-enhancing system that increases your skin's permeability. This enables Elestrin to be "boosted" through your skin where it's then absorbed by your bloodstream.

Wash your hands with soap and water after applying Elestrin to reduce the chance that the medicine will be spread from your hands to other people. Do not allow others to come in contact with the area where you applied the gel for at least 2 hours after application.

All estrogen therapy has risks. Please see important risk information at the bottom of this page. Before you start treatment, discuss the benefits and risks of any therapy with your healthcare provider.
